The Pyramid of Performance: How We Build Strong, Capable Humans in Long Ashton, Brislington & Portishead
At Real Good Fitness, we don’t just throw together random workouts. Every drill, every class, and every term is designed around our Pyramid of Performance. This framework helps us coach people of all abilities to move better, get stronger, and unlock their athletic potential.
Whether you train with us in Long Ashton, join our outdoor sessions in Brislington, or take part in our fitness community in Portishead, the same coaching structure underpins everything we do.
It’s simple: we build from the ground up. Each layer of the pyramid supports the next, and each layer connects directly to the classes we run.
Base Layer: Mobility, Stability & Body Awareness
This is the foundation of everything. Before we ask you to pick up a kettlebell or sprint across the park, we make sure you can move well, control your body, and feel confident in the basics.
Think joint mobility, core stability, balance, and posture. It’s about learning how your body works and how to move it safely and effectively.
This is why our Foundations course exists: to help new members build that solid base before progressing into our full training programme across Long Ashton, Brislington and Portishead.
Middle Layer: Strength & Endurance
Once you can move well, it’s time to build strength and stamina. These are the qualities that make daily life easier, carrying shopping, playing with kids, hiking up hills, and they’re also the gateway to performance.
At this stage, we develop your ability to handle resistance, repeat quality reps, and sustain effort over time. You’ll see this in kettlebell squats, pressing, pull-ups, carries, and conditioning circuits.
This is where our Progressions classes come in. Sessions are designed to build strength and endurance step by step, with logbooks to help track your improvements — whether you’re training in Long Ashton, Brislington or Portishead.
Top Layer: Power
At the peak of the pyramid is power, moving with speed, explosiveness, and athleticism. This is about turning strength into performance: sprinting, jumping, snatching, and throwing. It’s where you start to feel truly athletic.
You’ll find this at the core of our Athlete classes, where we take all the qualities you’ve built and push them into higher gear.
Keep Building the Base
Here’s the important part: reaching the top doesn’t mean you’re finished with the bottom. A pyramid with a narrow base and a heavy top will topple over — and the same goes for training.
Even if you’re powerful, you need to keep working on mobility, stability, and body awareness. That strong foundation allows you to keep progressing safely, avoid injuries, and ensure your performance has a solid foundation.
The Takeaway
When you train with us, whether you’re local to Long Ashton, Brislington, or Portishead, you’re not just ticking off workouts. You’re climbing (and reinforcing) the Pyramid of Performance.
Build your base.
Add strength and endurance.
Unlock power.
Then circle back and keep strengthening the foundation.
That’s how we create strong, capable humans who can move with confidence for life.
