The RGF Way: Why We Train Outdoors All Year in Bristol (Even When It’s Grim)
Winter in the UK is not exactly known for perfect training conditions. Cold mornings, dark evenings, and the occasional sideways rain are all part of the deal.
It is one of the questions we get asked the most at Real Good Fitness.
“Is it always outside?”
“Even in winter?”
“What happens if it’s raining?”
The short answer is yes. We train outdoors all year round.
No matter if you train with us in Portishead, Long Ashton, or Brislington, all of our sessions take place outside.
Not because we are trying to be extreme or prove a point, but because we genuinely believe outdoor training leads to better habits, better energy, and a stronger community around the sessions.
Once people experience it for themselves, even on a cold February morning, it usually starts to make sense.
The RGF Philosophy
At Real Good Fitness, training outdoors is not just about where the sessions take place. It is part of how we approach fitness as a whole.
Most of us spend a huge portion of our lives indoors. Offices, cars, shops, sofas. By the time people arrive at a workout they have often been inside all day breathing recycled air and staring at screens.
Training outside changes that straight away. Fresh air, open space, and a bit of nature tend to shift people’s mood almost instantly. Sessions feel less like something you have to squeeze into your day and more like something you actually enjoy doing.
Outdoor training also strips things back to what really matters. Moving well, building strength, and working alongside other people without the pressure or distractions that often come with big gyms. No mirrors, no egos, and no one trying to claim ownership of the space.
There is also something about training in the elements that builds a quiet resilience. Not the shouty bootcamp type. Just the simple habit of showing up, getting moving, and realising the weather is rarely as bad as you thought.
And if we are honest, there is always a slightly smug feeling when you finish a workout outside on a cold day.
Why Outdoor Training Works
It turns out there is a growing body of research supporting the benefits of exercising outdoors.
Studies looking at something called green exercise, which simply means physical activity in natural environments, have found improvements in mood, stress levels, and self esteem. In some cases these benefits appear within just a few minutes of being outside.
Other research has shown that people often enjoy outdoor workouts more and are more likely to stick with exercise long term when it takes place outside rather than indoors.
Natural daylight also plays an important role in energy levels, sleep cycles, and vitamin D production, something that can be particularly valuable during darker UK winters.
So while outdoor training might seem unusual at first, there is actually some solid science behind why it works so well.
Outdoors? So It’s a Bootcamp?
One of the first assumptions people make when they hear “outdoor fitness” is that it must be a bootcamp. Lots of shouting, endless burpees, and someone with a stopwatch yelling at you in the rain.
That is not really what we do at Real Good Fitness.
Our sessions are structured and coached, with a strong focus on technique and building strength over time. Rather than simply exhausting people for an hour, the aim is to help people move well, learn proper skills, and gradually build confidence in their training.
We also keep our sessions small, usually no more than eight people. That means everyone gets proper coaching and exercises can be adapted to suit different abilities, goals, and experience levels.
So while we do train outdoors, the experience is much closer to small group coaching than a traditional bootcamp.
Why Winter Is Actually a Great Time to Start
It might sound a little strange, but winter is actually one of the best times to start training outdoors.
For one thing, it removes the idea that conditions need to be perfect before you begin. Once you realise you can train, move, and feel good even on a cold morning, the barrier to getting started becomes much smaller.
There is also a real sense of achievement that comes with training through the winter months. Turning up, getting moving, and finishing a session when it is cold or a little damp always feels worth it afterwards.
And when spring and summer eventually arrive, everything suddenly feels a lot easier. Lighter evenings, warmer weather, and a body that has already built a solid foundation of strength and fitness.
So while winter might not seem like the obvious time to begin, it often ends up being the time people build the strongest habits.
The RGF Way
At the end of the day, outdoor training is not about being extreme or proving how tough you are.
It is about keeping fitness simple and effective. Moving well, building strength, and spending time outside instead of another hour indoors.
It is also about the people. Training alongside others who are working towards similar goals, supporting each other, and sharing the occasional laugh when the weather does its best to make things interesting.
That combination, fresh air, good coaching, and a strong community, is what makes Real Good Fitness what it is.
Even when the weather is a bit grim.
